Pregnancy Q & A

How soon should I make a doctor’s appointment once I become pregnant?

If you think you’re pregnant, or you have a positive home pregnancy test, make an appointment with Dr. Coy as soon as possible. The team at First Desert Obstetrics & Gynecology Medical Associates confirms your pregnancy with a simple urine test. Dr. Coy performs an exam to determine how far into the pregnancy you are and discusses prenatal care for you and your baby.

Beginning with the first appointment, it’s a good idea to attend your regularly scheduled prenatal doctor’s visits to ensure that you and your baby are progressing as you should. Dr. Coy is experienced in high-risk pregnancies, too, so he can determine if you’re in that category and provide the expert care you need at every stage of your pregnancy.

What are the early signs of pregnancy?

Whether you’ve been trying to conceive for a while or you’ve just begun trying, you may experience some early signs that your body is changing as a result of the earliest stages of pregnancy. Some symptoms to watch for include:

  • Missed periods
  • Sensitivity to smells
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Food aversions
  • Fatigue
  • Mood swings
  • Frequent urination
  • Swollen, tender breasts
  • Feeling bloated

Although the early signs of pregnancy may be hard to differentiate from your normal premenstrual symptoms, if you suspect pregnancy is the cause, take an at-home pregnancy test to confirm.

What is a high-risk pregnancy?

If you are prone to certain health conditions or complications, your pregnancy is considered high-risk. It’s nothing to be alarmed about; it just means Dr. Coy may recommend extra prenatal testing or additional ultrasounds, and more closely monitor your pregnancy and health conditions. For example, if you have diabetes or high blood pressure, Dr. Coy takes extra precautions to help you control those conditions during your pregnancy.

Additionally, if you are over the age of 35, a teenager, or you have undergone fertility treatments, you are considered to be in the high-risk category for your pregnancy. Also, if you’re pregnant with more than one baby, such as twins or triplets, your risk factors for certain complications increase, so you are in the high-risk category.

Dr. Coy provides the highest standard of prenatal care and is with you each step of your pregnancy through delivery and for postpartum care to ensure that you and your baby are healthy and safe.
